It was December of 1993, on the night
of my birthday when I thought of my
mother and a particular memory
when I was about four years old. She
took me to a cemetery to visit a
relative's grave. I remember noticing
how bright and sunny the day was and
the grass a soft forest green. As I
looked up at the sky in awe of its
expanse, a breeze suddenly hit my
face. I burst out laughing and took
off running barefoot across this
beautiful 'garden'. Once in a
while I would glance toward her
direction seeing her kneel by the
grave not understanding the sadness
she was feeling, nor, did I have any
idea that I would soon feel that same
sadness in a short time to come. She
died two years later.
When I thought of this memory,
something kept nudging my soul that
night as I sat quietly by the
candlelight looking up at the moon. I
wondered what the breeze tried to say
to me all those years ago when I was
too busy laughing and running to pay
attention. As I listened to what my
spirit had to say and watched the
candlelight gently sway with the soft
breeze, this is what I heard. . .
I Heard The Wind Say
Closely listen to me with my
breeze against your face.
Take flight with me
upon my wings while the sunlight warms this
place.
It's been years since such a child has
seen my beauty here;
Far too young to
understand each marker sheds a tear."
"As
you look up at the heavens, watch the beauty
that goes by;
The green grass that you're
running on adds laughter to your eyes.
For
now, you cannot understand the sadness that
surrounds,
but to hear a child's laughter,
brings peace upon these grounds."
"The
brightness of this summer's day is all your eyes
will see,
so run and laugh this time away. .
.you'll long remember me."
No tears
are in your eyes of blue, with your mother, safe
and sound,
but just two years ahead of you,
she too, will lie this ground."
"You won't have that smile I see
or the laughter on your face;
Only in this
memory of a warm and gentle place.
And when
you must come back to me, forever, here to
stay,
I'll remember you. . .the little girl
that laughed and ran and played."
