So the Pharisees
and teachers of the law asked Jesus, "Why don't your disciples live
according to the traditions of the elders, instead of eating their
food with unclean hands?" He replied, "Isaiah was right when he
prophesied about you hypocrites; As it is written: 'These people
honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me; they
worship Me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.'
You lay aside the commandment of God and hold to the traditions of
men such as washing of pots and cups and many such things as you do.
You disregard God's commandment so that you can keep your own
traditions."
(Mark 7:5-9)
It wasn't the
fact that Jesus was not concerned about cleanliness but He tried to
deal with the most important aspect. . ."If your heart is clean and
right before God, all else will follow." Yet, it's obvious that the
Pharisees could have cared less if their hands were clean or not. It
was their usual head-game of manipulation and control. It is done
with guilt, fear and self righteousness. If God is confronting you
about something, it is conviction, not condemnation. It is to
strengthen you, not tear you down.
If anyone says something that is hurtful, embarrassing,
intimidating, or out-right controlling, stay clear of
them. Their 'sound advice' is not coming from God. Whether
it be your pastor, Christian friend or even your own
children, do not allow them to take control or manipulate
you into thinking, living, acting or doing what they want
you to do. It will destroy you and every aspect of your
life.
Jesus had little
patience for people who tried to manipulate Him, especially when it
came to showing others the way to heaven through their own man-made
rules and regulations. The Pharisees did this often to Jesus using
guilt and condemnation. They tried to persuade Jesus to obey their
own laws by calling Him and His followers filthy. Jesus called them
hypocrites.
