Dance of the Fireflies

I was playing in the backyard when I was five years old,
and grabbing at the fire-flies that I was trying to hold

I tried to catch the brilliance of these creatures giving light.
I imagined them as tiny stars that danced the sky at night.

“I was there among them.” The faerie said to me.
“Open up your eyes and trust what I want you to see.”

She hovered right before my face, and gave a gentle stare.
She said those words I heard before that echoed in the air. . . .

“We started long ago, although our journey is as one.
Go back into the past when you and I had just begun.”

A mist of blue had swirled around the yard that we played in.
Then I too, had a garment on  as if born to my skin.

I soon became just like her, as our steps were synchronized.
We danced upon the land and air, in our own world, disguised.
