Boothill Cemetery was founded in 1878, located on a small hill just northwest of Tombstone. Some of the graves are not marked in their exact location and may be off a foot or so. For many years the cemetery lay dormant and the wooden markers rotted away or were stolen by souvenir hunters. Eventually, the markers were replaced with the original inscription written on them according to documents and relatives. There is also a Jewish Cemetery down a trail and a Chinese section here at Boothill Cemetery.

Sometimes a stranger came through town and didn't live past a day or a 'new-comer' was found just outside of town. No one knew who they were and no relatives or friends came to claim them. The only proof of their existence was an unmarked grave or a marker labeled, "Unknown."

A few of the famous people of the Old West Days are buried here......the innocent as well as the guilty, while over and around them grow weeds, desert plants and the Crucifixion thorn.
